New York Bite Beauty Lab Experience

Back when I was in New York in January, I decided to pop by the Bite Beauty Lab store, which is owned by the well-known makeup company 'Bite Beauty'. It's a really innovative concept, as you're able to experience making your very own personalised lipstick. I knew about this store from BuzzFeed's famous viral videos, where they had a video dedicated to how cool this stores concept is.

There are two different price points for making your lipstick. The first is the custom lipstick (what I chose), which costs $55 for 1 shade or $80 for 2 shades. The first step is where you choose from an "a la carte" array of 200 pigment shades exclusive to the store. You then pick from a choice of 10 scents/flavours, including: cherry, mint, vanilla, citrus, mango, violet, coconut, wild berry and fresh citrus. Once you've figured out the scent and the pigment shades, you then pick the base formula, ranging from glossy sheer, matte creme, and amuse bouche.

The second option, however, is called the 'Bespoke' lipstick, and it costs $150 for 2 shades (no option for single shade, you must make/buy 2). This option is pricey, but a unforgettable experience as you dictate any colour you want and watch it be mixed before your eyes. This option is better if you know exactly what colour you want, and you know your undertones and colour palette well. The cost is a bit pricey, but it includes a lip scrub, mini Lip Mask, and Lip Primer.

I had taken an uber to the New York Bite Beauty Lab, located on Prince St, which is quite a drive from where I was staying.. around 30-40 minutes. I had called the store multiple times in advance to book an appointment, however, they didn't answer so I decided just to rock up as I didn't think it would be that busy. When I arrived, they were fully booked for the day, which I understood because the store was packed and there were only a few workers there. The woman was really nice and told me that there was a free spot the next day.. so without hesitation, I booked my appointment as I didn't want to miss it!

Fast forward the next day, I arrived at the lip lab and was greeted by a really friendly lip lab artist, (I unfortunately forgot her name though!) She sat me down on one of the stools, and she began by giving me a lip scrub and lip mask to prep my lips for the colour testing! I chose a few different colours from the collection they had (which might I add wasn't very extensive..), and she began mixing the shades together to create 4 shades in which I could choose 'the one' from. I actually chose the first colour she made, as I really liked the pink undertone to it. Once we had the colour, I went over to the scent station, where I chose from a variety of different scents. I mixed the scents vanilla and violet! We then moved onto making the actual lipstick, which was actually a really cool thing to watch! To my surprise it was a really quick process, and my lipstick was made before my eyes!

Overall, I feel that this is a good experience to do once in your lifetime! Especially whilst in New York.. however, personally I don't feel the need to continuously make custom shades, especially for $55. I'm pretty happy with the lipsticks I buy from M.A.C or liquid lipsticks from Kylie Cosmetics. If you have a hard time finding your 'perfect nude' or 'perfect red' shade though, I would recommended trying out the Lip Lab concept, and who knows, you might've found your holy grail shade!
